gwe D.O. Ikeanyi and his wife Mercy Nkechi Ikeanyi are committed to uplifting humanity through education. It is a passion of our mother till date. Before our father, Igwe, passed on in 2009, he spent his entire life and resources building and financing the education of relatives, members of Enugwu-Agidi community, and his in-laws.

O ur mother, Mrs. Mercy Ikeanyi (Osodieme) was born in 1935 to the Anwuna family of Agbiligba, Nanka. She loves learning even though she could not prolong her own education because of early marriage. She remains an avid reader and financier of the education of neighborhood children till date. As her nickname, Osodieme (the companion of her husband in performance), translates in English, our mother is the rock behind every single accomplishment of our father, Igwe.

Igwe D.O. Ikeanyi was born on September 20, 1922 and was able to earn Standard six education. He later acquired further education through several trainings in Army and courses he attended locally and overseas as a police officer. Even though Igwe was limited by finances in his pursuit of higher learning, he was known to be exceptionally brilliant and was always on top of his class as a student. He had insatiable quest for knowledge. He was a ferocious reader and a prolific writer who was always reading or writing in his spare time. Above all, his love for learning compelled him to pay the school fees for so many people and women, particularly at a time when educating women was not popular.

As brief highlights, in 1970 immediately after Nigeria civil war and at the age 48 when his mates were returning back to the cities to pursue various means of livelihood, Igwe settled in Enugwu-Agidi permanently and began the needful work of rebuilding the town. One of his first projects was to rebuild the dilapidated elementary schools in order to send children back to school. He established adhoc kitchens and mobilized women to cook and feed most of the population who were slowly dying of malnutrition (Kwashiorkor).

"In recognition of Davidson Okafor Ikeanyi’s pioneering role and servant-leadership, he was crowned the traditional ruler, Igwe of Enugwu-Agidi, in 1976 and served the community for 33 and half years. He continued to pay the school fees of indigent people from secondary to tertiary institutions in Nigeria until he took his last breath."

As elementary pupils were heading towards graduation, Igwe, always a strategic planner and thinker, started thinking about building secondary schools to ensure that there were schools for students transitioning from elementary to secondary level. Igwe mobilized the wealthy members of the town and commenced the efforts that led to the building of Enugwu-Agidi Girls’ Secondary School in 1978. Upon the completion of the school, Igwe worked hard and secured Anambra State government accreditation for the school to facilitate its admission of the first set of students in 1978. Always tireless in pursuit of educational opportunities for the Enugwu-Agidi community, Igwe mobilized the community again to build Boys’ Technical School, Enugwu-Agidi which opened in 1979. He later spare-headed the efforts to establish more elementary schools. It is noteworthy that no other schools were built in Enugwu-Agidi until eight years after Igwe’s death in 2009. Eleven of his own children earned college degrees and many advanced degrees. Igwe and Mercy Ikeanyi shared a firm believe that every child deserves quality education regardless of career plan in life. They believe that education is the foundation for any occupation and the IDOMI Foundation intends to further their legacy and wishes.
