One of the basic necessities of life is water. While it is possible to remain alive for many days without solid food, life cannot go on longer than a day or two without water. Many people, particularly children die untimely in Nigeria due to lack of back necessities including water.

By September 2022, life expectancy at birth in Nigeria was about 61.33 years. This figure equals 60 years for males and 63 years for females. It also means that life expectancy at birth in Nigeria is among the lowest in Africa as well as in the world according to UNICEF data.

According to UNICEF record, poor access to improved water and sanitation in Nigeria remains a major contributing factor to high morbidity and mortality rates among children under five. The use of contaminated drinking water and poor sanitary conditions result in increased vulnerability to water-borne diseases, including diarrhea which leads to deaths of more than 70,000 children under five annually.
